Split the bill calculator
Split a meal, a trip or a shared cost evenly, or by what each person had, with the tip shared fairly.
Short answer: to split a bill evenly, add the tip (bill × tip %) and divide by the number of people. To split by what people ordered, divide shared items equally, add each person's own items, then add the same tip percentage to each person's share.
Fair splits without the maths at the table
- Agree on the method before the bill comes. Even or by items: decide while ordering.
- Treat shared dishes as shared. Starters and bottles go in the shared field and are split equally.
- Tip as a percentage. The same percentage on each share keeps it fair for the person who ordered less.
- Log your share, not the whole bill. If you paid for everyone, record your part as spending and the rest as money owed to you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill first (bill × tip percentage), then divide the total by the number of people. When people ordered different amounts, give each person the same tip percentage on their own share.
Is it fairer to split evenly or by what people ordered?
Evenly is quicker and fine when orders are close. When someone had much less, or did not drink, splitting by items is fairer, and it saves an awkward conversation.
How do I split shared dishes?
Put shared starters, bottles or sides in the shared field. They are divided equally between everyone, then each person's own items are added on top.
Should I round up?
Rounding each share up to a whole number makes paying in cash or by transfer easier. Any extra can go to the tip.
