How much can I spend per day?

A daily spending limit until your next payday, from the money you have right now.

Short answer: take the money you have now, subtract bills still due before your next payday and anything you want to keep aside, then divide by the days until payday (counting today). The result is how much you can spend per day without running short.

Your daily limit

Enter the money you have now.

The formula

(money now − bills still due − money kept aside) ÷ days until payday = daily spending limit. Counting to payday instead of the end of the month matters when you are paid weekly, every two weeks or mid-month.

Make the daily limit work

  1. Check it in the morning. One number is easier to keep in your head than a monthly plan.
  2. Re-run it with your real balance. The limit corrects itself: a big day lowers the days after it, a quiet day raises them.
  3. Keep bills out of it. Anything due before payday comes off first, so a rent day does not surprise you.
  4. Try a no-spend day. A day at zero adds a full day's limit to the rest. The no-spend challenge makes a game of it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much I can spend per day?

Take the money you have now, subtract bills still due before your next payday and anything you want to keep aside, then divide by the number of days until payday. That is your daily spending limit.

Should today count as a day?

Yes. The calculator counts today and stops the day before payday, because on payday new money arrives.

What if I spend more than the limit one day?

Nothing is ruined. Enter your new balance tomorrow and the limit spreads the difference across the days that are left. Spending less does the same in reverse.

Is a daily limit better than a monthly budget?

It is the same budget seen through a smaller window. A monthly number is easy to overspend in week one; a daily number tells you what today can take.
