How to track cash spending

To track cash, treat it as its own wallet. When you withdraw money, record it as a transfer from your bank to your cash wallet, not as spending. Then log each cash purchase from the cash wallet as it happens, and count the cash in your wallet once a week to catch anything you missed.

1. Give cash its own wallet

Whether you use an app or a notebook, keep cash separate from your bank account so you always know how much physical money you should have.

2. Record ATM withdrawals as transfers

Taking out 100 isn’t spending 100. Log it as a transfer from bank to cash; the spending happens when you use the cash. This avoids counting the same money twice.

3. Log purchases at the till

Cash leaves no record, so the moment you pay is the only reliable time to log it. Keep the most common cash purchases (coffee, lunch, bus fare) one tap away.

4. Count weekly and reconcile

Once a week, count your cash. If it’s less than your tracker says, log the difference as “untracked cash” so your budget stays honest, and you’ll learn where cash tends to vanish.

5. Keep receipts for bigger purchases

Snap a photo of larger receipts. It helps with returns and lets you log details later if you were in a hurry.
